LauraLynn is Ireland’s only children’s hospice and provides specialised paediatric palliative care services to children with life-limiting conditions.
While LauraLynn gratefully receives some statutory funding towards the operation of its hospice service, this only represents 31c in every euro spent on care leading to a heavy dependency on fundraising and donations from the public. By contrast, adult hospices are now predominantly fully state funded. Sustainable funding is needed to ensure that LauraLynn can provide equitable access to care and support services for all children and families with unmet needs into the future.
The national policy on children’s palliative care was published in 2009 and is based on a needs assessment conducted in 2005. A new policy is needed to take account of the significant changes that have taken place in the last two decades.
